NATIONAL CASH REGISTER
“NCR provides the reliability and security that comes with decades of innovation and experience to help your business thrive. We are the global leader in ATM software applications and pioneers in digital banking.” – ncr.com
You may not have noticed, but National Cash Register (NCR) is more than big, gold-plated cash registers these days. In fact, NCR is almost everywhere you can make a purchase: travel kiosks, grocery self-checkout machines, fast-food order screens, banking applications, etc. They’ve evolved with the times and aim to keep evolving, continuing to exceed their customers’ needs.
CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER
In 2018 NCR’s Headquarters made the official move from Duluth to Midtown, Atlanta. Aside from state of the art conference room booking tech, a 24/7 Mr. Merchant market, thoughtfully designed flexible working spaces, a robust fitness area on the seventh floor, and all the views of Atlanta’s cityscape a person could want, NCR also has a space solely dedicated to their current and future customers: The Customer Experience Center (CXC).
Here, customers learn through a guided tour paired with fully functioning technology about all of the iNCRedible ways National Cash Register can help their business step into the future and thrive. Dagger’s Creative team was tasked with getting the conversation started. NCR provided eight distinct consumer journeys, highlighting where its partnership simplified and improved the experience overall.
My role: Concepting, Illustration/Design, Art Direction
ILLUSTRATION HELP: CHARLES GUTIERREZ
Copywriting: JAMESON LAMARCA
SENIOR ART DIRECTOR: MELISSA WITHORN
Illustrating Isometric
NCR’s team knew the style as well as the possible future states of these consumer journey illustrations it was hoping to showcase in the CXC: isometric/3D with potential for animated elements. Knowing these designs needed to exist flawlessly at scales both exceptionally large and functionally small, as well as being motion-friendly, Illustrator (a dominantly 2D Adobe program) was the only way to go.
This meant building custom grids, watching a plethora of YouTube tutorials, and occasionally banging my head against my desk.
make it custom
Charles, our freelance illustrator, and I met daily to ensure we were on the right track. Acting as Art Director, it was my job not only to help create the illustrations, but to guide Charles on what I was looking for. We eventually settled into a rhythm of him illustrating the first iterations of each platform, then passing them to me for editing/finessing.
I also ended up doing my fair share of illustrating, creating pieces like the self-checkout machine, a modern kitchen, floating football game, and more.
more potential
Backtracking a bit here, Dagger’s first project with NCR was for its outdoor pay-at-the-pump terminal, OPTIC. We created a landing page, two e-books, an infographic and two animated videos all focused on better explaining the technology’s capabilities along with the benefits of incorporating said technology into current gas pump interfaces.
